Blog 6- Second Life Object

Political and Pedagogical Object

The object I chose to attach to my avatar was an ipod.  I chose this object for a couple reasons. First, it is a personal object that I pretty much never leave home without. I bring my ipod everywhere I go such as class, to a friends house or when going on campus to do work. I use my ipod the most at school due to the walking that has to be done in order to get around. I also use it at home to listen to music when I am getting ready to go somewhere or when friends are over.  Secondly, I chose this object because I wanted to show people who I am. I am someone who loves listening to music; it is in my soul. I grew up with all kinds of music which is represented on my ipod.  Therefore, by attaching it it my avatar it will show people that I am someone who enjoys the sound of music. Thirdly, I use my ipod with my studies.  When I have to do an assignment, project, or study for a test I always have music on. It keeps me concentrated on what I am doing as well as blocks out distractions that could be around me. I also use it sometimes to record things that I want to remember or to upload pod casts that have to do with interests or school work that I have.  Finally, I chose an ipod for my object because I believe music has a lot to do with art and that it could be an used for education in the classroom. I think music in an art classroom helps students think of ideas, projects or opinions for their work.

  1. The iPod is a meaningful cultural artifact for you. It is expresses who you are, which is to say it (and the music that it plays) gives you agency in accomplishing your daily endeavors. It is also pedagogical in that you use it to teach yourself with recordings and podcasts, and perceive its usefulness for teaching students in your future classroom by including music. With students having iPods they select the music (or silence) rather than the teacher or a student having to vote to select particular music and volume of that music. Music has a long history of being political, in shaping ideas, and in stimulating activism.
