"What are five things that are really important that you hope your students learn from you as a teacher in this imagined teaching context in 2020?"
5 things I want my students to learn from me:
1. Have your art be something you want it to be; have your ideas behind it; enjoy your work.
- I want my students to be able to have their work show their concept, idea, and process that was or is going on in their heads. I want them to not be ashamed of their work; rather embrace it and make it what it can be.
2. Be professional about peers work; have good criticism.
- I want my students to be able to critique another students work without the comments of it just being good or bad. I want them to be able to say why it is either one; what do you like about it? what do you not like about it? why is it interesting? what makes it stand out to you whether it is good or bad? did they make their point across? what do you as an observer see from the work of art?
3. Believe that you can achieve what you put effort into
-I want my students to learn that effort gets put into anything you want to achieve and it does not just have to be with art. It can be with any other class, if they want it to work out or achieve in that subject effort needs to be put forth in order to do that.
4. Realize it is okay to fail; not everything will be perfect the first time.
-I want my students to realize that it is okay to fail the first time with art; not everything will come out perfect the first time. Their ideas and plans might change whether they want them to or not therefore, I want them to not be afraid to fail instead learn from it and expand their ideas or try different ways in order to make it work.
5. Teach the different medias that can be used as well as the techniques and vocabulary that go along with them.
-I want my students to learn about the variety of medias that can be used such as pencil, charcoal, paint either oil or acrylic, pen and ink, clay, pastels, etc. I want them to be able to try them out; test them and get comfortable with the ones they like the most. I want to teach them the different techniques and vocabulary that can be used with each one such as pencil- shading, values, painting- color theory, how to mix paints, primary colors, etc. I want to teach them the basics so then they can come up with their own artistic technique on how to use each media since in my opinion there is not one specific way to follow.
